Dock is excited to announce that users can now conveniently create and manage their decentralized identifiers (DIDs) from the Dock Wallet phone app. Up until recently, people were using Dock Certs to create their DIDs. The Dock Wallet enables users to fully own, control, and manage credentials that are issued as Verifiable Credentials such as training certificates, driver’s licenses, and university degrees.

What Are DIDs and Why Do They Matter?

For a long time, we have been using user names, passwords, and emails that are centralized and/or federated (e.g. signing in with a Facebook or Google account) digital identifiers to access apps and websites. But these identifiers often enable many companies like Google to use data to track online behavior, resulting in people’s data being used for ad targeting, and organizations risk being a target of hacks or large-scale data breaches when they store user information on centralized storage systems.

In contrast to centralized identifiers, decentralized identifiers (DIDs) solve many of these problems. They enable a universally accepted standard for exchanging and verifying digital credentials.

A decentralized identifier is a globally unique identifier made up of a string of letters and numbers that is independent of any organization.

DIDs FUNCTION

• Allows the owner (organization or individual) to fully own and control their data.
• Comes with one or many private keys and public key pairs
• Don’t contain personal data or wallet information
• Enable private and secure connections between two parties and can be verified anywhere at any time
• Can be associated with Verifiable Credentials

Furthermore, you can make as many DIDs as you want for different purposes or interactions. It can be either for educational purposes or to store credentials like a university degree and training certificate. It can also be buying and trading NFTs as well as holding different types of IDs like driver’s license, state ID, and passport.

Verifiable Credentials – leveraging the power of the Dock blockchain

Dock’s highly scalable Substrate-based blockchain specializes in issuing decentralized identifiers and cryptographically-signed Verifiable Credentials at a very low cost.

Furthermore, Dock’s groundbreaking blockchain technology is redefining how you trust data. It is an ideal infrastructure for a completely permissionless digital credential ecosystem enabling anyone to issue, store, as well as verify Verifiable Credentials and create Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs).

Moreover, the Dock blockchain forms the basis of trust by maintaining a verifiable registry of all DIDs, proof of credentials issued (if the credential is anchored), public cryptographic keys, and revocation registries. Its advanced architecture prevents unauthorized users from accessing or modifying any data in the credentials.

Credentials issued on the Dock blockchain are stores off-chain. Typically in a holder’s digital wallet app, along with the cryptographic key pairs. In addition, to ensure data privacy, the only data registered on the Dock chain are the issuer and holder’s DIDs, the Credential Schema (its “template”), and the Revocation Registries. The issuer may also record the hash of a credential on the Dock blockchain; this is called Anchoring.

Docking the Verifiable Credentials

• Identity Owners—Everyone who owns a Decentralized Identifier (DID) on the Dock blockchain.
• Issuers—Entities who cryptographically sign and issue Verifiable Credentials. The issuers put a cryptographic signature into the credential using their private key.
• Verifiers—Entities who verify the received presentations from the holder. They also require verification of certain conditions to engage, transact, or provide services to holders.
• Holders—The sole owner and the receiver of Verifiable Credentials from the issuers. However, holders can verify the authenticity of their received credentials and their revocation status anytime.
• Schemas—Defines what fields requires for the Verifiable Credential. They are also a useful way of enforcing a specific structure on a verifiable credential.
• PoE Anchors—Constitutes the credentials’ proof of existence that demonstrates that the credentials exist when the block containing the anchor creates in their original form (as reflected in the hash).
• Revocation Registries—A registry of IDs that contains no personal information, but is check whenever a Verifier wants to verify if a credential is revoking.
