zkBridge: Trustless cross-chain interoperability with Zero-Knowledge Proofs
One important aspect of the Manta Network and Polyhedra collaboration is to bring zkBridge to the Manta Network ecosystem. The zkBridge is a cross-chain interoperability protocol that utilizes zkSNARKs (zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge) to efficiently convince the receiver chain that a certain state transition happened on the sender chain. With zero-knowledge proofs, zkBridge offers both strong security without relying on external assumptions and a significant reduction in on-chain verification cost. At its core, zkBridge is composed of a block header relay network and an updater contract.
The block header relay network acts as an information conduit, fetching block headers from the sender chain. These headers are then subjected to zkSNARK-based proof generation, providing indisputable evidence of their validity. Once these proofs are generated, they are transmitted to the updater contract residing on the receiver chain.
The updater contract, equipped with a light-client state, performs automated verification of the proofs and adds the validated block headers to the sender chain’s current main chain. This mechanism ensures that state transitions on the sender chain are accurately and efficiently reflected on the receiver chain, paving the way for enhanced cross-chain interoperability between various layer-1 and layer-2 networks.
Enable Fast Finality for Manta Pacific
One of the primary obstacles in the realm of cross-chain interactions has been the lengthy timeframes for the cross-chain and cross-rollup interoperability from an optimistic rollup to other blockchain networks, due to the long challenge period for state finality.
Manta Pacific is a unique L2 ecosystem for EVM-native ZK applications, which provides a scalable and inexpensive gas-fee environment for ZK applications powered by OP Stack. To improve the efficiency and user experience, they will deploy the zkBridge fast finality product for optimistic rollups to Manta Pacific. To enable fast finality, zkBridge incorporates Lagrange State Committees, which provide a mechanism for generating zero-knowledge state proofs for optimistic rollups by using the restake Ethereum validators on EigenLayer. Each State Committee attests to the finality of a proposed state transition from Manta Pacific to Ethereum.
Utilizing efficient zero-knowledge proof protocols, the zkBridge Fast Finality Product achieves the monumental task of proving the Ethereum Proof-of-Stake consensus and state proofs from state committees for optimistic rollups within seconds. By using the efficient proof system, deVirgo, the proving time for Ethereum full PoS can be as fast as 10 seconds per block, which is enough to catch up with the block time of Ethereum.
