Understanding ERC-20 and ERC-721 Tokens! Blockchain technology has created various tokens, notably ERC-20 and ERC-721, which are essential for decentralized finance (DeFi), digital assets, and non-fungible tokens (NFTs).

In this article, we will dive into the differences and unique properties of ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens, helping you understand their role in the blockchain space.

ERC-20 Tokens: The Standard for Fungible Assets

ERC-20 is the technical standard for tokens on the Ethereum blockchain, where “ERC” stands for Ethereum Request for Comments. This standard defines a common list of rules that Ethereum tokens must adhere to, ensuring interoperability between various decentralized applications (dApps) and exchanges.

Key Characteristics of ERC-20:

Fungibility: Each ERC-20 token is identical to every other one in the contract. This makes it ideal for cryptocurrencies, where each unit must be equal in value and interchangeable.

Use Case: These tokens are widely used in DeFi, acting as currencies, staking rewards, or governance tokens for decentralized platforms.

Interoperability: ERC-20 tokens can seamlessly interact with other Ethereum-based systems, wallets, and platforms, ensuring a smooth user experience.

ERC-721 Tokens: The Foundation of NFTs

While ERC-20 tokens represent fungible assets, ERC-721 is the standard for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Unlike ERC-20, each ERC-721 token is unique and non-interchangeable, essential for applications like NFTs that require distinct properties.

Key Characteristics of ERC-721:

Non-fungibility
Each ERC-721 token has its unique identifier, allowing it to represent one-of-a-kind digital assets. This is what makes ERC-721 the go-to standard for NFTs.

Ownership
ERC-721 tokens are used to prove ownership of digital assets such as art, collectibles, or even real estate in the digital world.

Unique Metadata
Every ERC-721 token contains additional metadata that describes the specific properties of the asset it represents, making it unique and valuable in its own right.

Use Cases for ERC-20 and ERC-721

ERC-20 Tokens
These are utilized in decentralized exchanges (DEXs), DeFi lending and borrowing platforms, and ICOs for fundraising.

ERC-721 Tokens
They have become popular in the art world via NFTs, with artists selling digital works on platforms like OpenSea and Rarible. ERC-721 tokens are also utilized in blockchain gaming for in-game assets and in the metaverse for virtual real estate.

The Future of ERC Tokens

Both ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens have paved the way for innovations in the Ethereum ecosystem. As Ethereum scales, new token standards like ERC-1155 may emerge, combining features for more complex and diverse applications.

ERC-20 tokens will lead DeFi, while ERC-721 tokens will fuel the NFT revolution, offering new opportunities for creators, collectors, and innovators in the digital realm.

Understanding these token standards is crucial for anyone looking to navigate the world of blockchain, cryptocurrency, and decentralized applications. As the technology matures, the potential for both ERC-20 and ERC-721 tokens will only expand, bringing new possibilities to life on Ethereum and beyond.

Ethereum is a decentralized, open-source blockchain network that allows developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) and smart contracts. Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency is Ether (ETH), which is used as a means of payment for transactions on the network. However, developers can also create their own digital assets, known as tokens, using the Ethereum platform. These tokens are known as ERC-20 tokens.

ERC-20 tokens are fungible tokens that operate on the Ethereum network. They follow a set of standardized rules, making them compatible with other ERC-20 tokens and allowing them to be easily traded on cryptocurrency exchanges. These tokens can represent anything of value, including assets such as real estate or securities.

The Advantages of ERC-20 Tokens

ERC-20 tokens have several advantages over traditional finance. Firstly, ERC-20 tokens are programmable, meaning that they can execute complex smart contracts automatically. This makes it possible to automate financial transactions, such as payments and settlements, without the need for intermediaries.

Secondly, ERC-20 tokens are highly liquid, meaning that they can be easily traded on cryptocurrency exchanges. This allows for greater access to capital and liquidity for companies and individuals, as well as more efficient price discovery.

Thirdly, ERC-20 tokens are highly secure. The Ethereum network uses a decentralized consensus mechanism known as proof-of-work (PoW), which makes it difficult for bad actors to manipulate the network. Additionally, ERC-20 tokens can be stored securely in digital wallets, reducing the risk of theft or fraud.

Use Cases for ERC-20 Tokens

There are several use cases for ERC-20 tokens in traditional finance. One of the most popular use cases is for initial coin offerings (ICOs), which allow companies to raise capital by issuing tokens to investors. ICOs have become increasingly popular in recent years, with some companies raising millions of dollars through this method.

Another use case for ERC-20 tokens is for asset tokenization. This involves representing real-world assets, such as real estate or commodities, as digital tokens on the Ethereum network. This allows for greater liquidity and accessibility to these assets, as well as easier fractional ownership.

A third use case for ERC-20 tokens is for peer-to-peer lending. This involves individuals lending money to each other without the need for intermediaries, using ERC-20 tokens as collateral. This can provide greater access to credit for individuals who may not be able to obtain loans through traditional financial institutions.

Challenges and Limitations of ERC-20 Tokens

While ERC-20 tokens offer many advantages, there are also several challenges and limitations to consider. Firstly, the Ethereum network has a limited capacity, meaning that it can only handle a certain number of transactions per second. This can lead to slow transaction times and higher fees during periods of high network congestion.

Secondly, ERC-20 tokens are subject to regulatory scrutiny, particularly in the United States. The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has stated that some ERC-20 tokens may be considered securities, which would subject them to securities laws and regulations.

Thirdly, ERC-20 tokens are vulnerable to hacks and security breaches. While the Ethereum network itself is highly secure, individual wallets and smart contracts may be vulnerable to attacks by bad actors.

Future of ERC-20 Tokens

Despite these challenges and limitations, the future of ERC-20 tokens looks bright. The continued development of the Ethereum network, including the transition to proof-of-stake (PoS), is expected to improve network capacity and reduce transaction times and fees.

Additionally, the continued adoption of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies is expected to drive further innovation and development of new use cases for ERC-20 tokens. As more companies to explore the benefits of ERC-20 tokens, we are likely to see more creative and innovative applications of these tokens in the coming years.

One potential area of growth for ERC-20 tokens is in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. DeFi refers to a range of financial applications that operate on decentralized blockchain networks, such as Ethereum. These applications allow users to lend, borrow, and trade digital assets without the need for intermediaries. ERC-20 tokens are well-suited to this environment, as they can be easily integrated into DeFi applications and provide liquidity and programmability.

Another potential area of growth for ERC-20 tokens is in the gaming industry. As blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies become more mainstream, we are likely to see more integration of these technologies into gaming platforms. ERC-20 tokens could be used to represent in-game items or currencies, allowing for greater interoperability between different games and platforms.

Conclusion

ERC-20 tokens are a disruptive technology that is changing the way we think about traditional finance. These tokens provide greater liquidity, programmability, and security than traditional financial instruments, and offer a range of innovative use cases that are only just beginning to be explored. While there are challenges and limitations to consider, the future of ERC-20 tokens looks bright, as blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies continue to gain wider adoption and acceptance. As we move forward, it will be exciting to see what new applications and innovations emerge in this rapidly evolving space.

Syntropy recently announced the halt of its Validator program on Amber Chain, which was based on Substrate. After careful consideration and thorough evaluation, they have decided to switch from the Polkadot ecosystem to the Cosmos ecosystem.

Their development team faced multiple challenges when building with the Substrate framework, which is used to build chains within the Polkadot ecosystem. It ultimately did not meet our specific needs and requirements. We experienced repeated stability issues with our public testnet, and developing business logic for our decentralized application was difficult and time-consuming.

The Syntropy team has spent considerable time researching various blockchain ecosystems and frameworks and ultimately decided that the Cosmos blockchain is the best fit for our use cases. The Cosmos ecosystem offers a solid and active community of developers and users who can provide support and guidance as we continue to develop and improve our products.

What is Syntropy?

While many Web3 projects focus on building decentralized applications, Syntropy is working towards a broader vision of decentralized Internet. Our patented Distributed Autonomous Routing Protocol (DARP) forms the backbone of the Syntropy Network, connecting all nodes, computers, and servers into a decentralized global network with built-in encryption and smart-routing capabilities.

Permissionless access to the Syntropy Network ensures an equal and level playing field for all network providers and users, regardless of their background. The decentralized network of nodes powering the network also enables secure and immutable tokenization of bandwidth through the Open Bandwidth Exchange (OBX). On the supply side, our infrastructure partners PCCW Global and Zenlayer tokenize and sell their excess bandwidth. On the demand side, Syntropy Network users such as Entain can access optimized bandwidth thanks to DARP, which runs on our partner infrastructure.

Why Cosmos?

The Cosmos ecosystem has a proven track record of being used in production environments, with over 250 projects currently running within it. Cosmos offers a simplified dApp development experience, allowing developers to use the programming language they are already proficient in. In our case, this means that our developers, who are proficient in Golang, will be able to quickly deploy our dApps into production.

Meme coins are a type of cryptocurrency characterized by a positive and enthusiastic user base. Cartoon or zoo animal memes are sometimes used to represent them. Dogecoin and Shiba Inu were two of the most popular cryptocurrencies to become internet memes during the current cryptocurrency boom.

What Is a Meme Coin?

The cryptocurrency community coined the term “meme coin” to describe widely traded digital currencies that are often portrayed with humorous or animated memes. Despite their entertainment appeal, investing in meme coins will likely waste time and money.

These include currencies like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, designed more for laughs than practicality. To prevent surprise volatility and losses when purchasing or selling meme coins, familiarizing yourself with the dangers involved is essential.

Is Meme Coin a Good Investment?

Numerous other meme coins have left ordinary investors deep in the red, much like Dogecoin did.

While the Shiba Inu is down 84% from its peak, even Dogecoin is down 91%! Both still retain market capitalization of $8.5 billion and $6.6 billion, respectively. In contrast to Bitcoin’s limited amount of 21 million, Meme coins typically have a large or limitless supply.

There is around 135.5 billion DOGE in circulation, and a successful miner earns about 10,000 DOGE (equivalent to about $660) every minute. Compare that to Bitcoin, where roughly $143,000 (or 6.25 BTC) is created every 10 minutes, and you get an idea of the magnitude of the difference in the issuance rate. Even among meme coins, Shiba Inu and Dogecoin stand out as examples of success. Most meme currency, though, is destined to disappear.

Dogecoin’s competitors in 2013 and 2014 are forgotten: “Nobody recalls the names of Dogecoin’s competitors from 2013-2014, that now don’t trade anywhere and destroyed unfathomable amounts of speculative money,” says Jonathan Zeppettini, Decred’s international operations lead. We tend to look just at the winners and overlook that they are anomalies. However, ordinary investors still need to try to get rich. But it’s still wise to view these more as risks than investments.

What Are The Top 10 Meme Coins?

🔸Dogecoin (DOGE)

Dogecoin (DOGE) was founded in 2013 by software programmers Jackson Palmer and Billy Marcus and is one of the most widely used meme coins. Its market capitalization of $55 billion in April 2021 propelled it into the top 10 cryptocurrency rankings. Similarly to other assets, DOGE benefited from the supply and demand market forces.

Despite its seemingly endless supply, demand for DOGE skyrocketed in the first few months of 2021. Thanks to the efforts of Dogecoin and Reddit, the general cryptocurrency boom, and the tweets of influential people, its value increased by 7,000% in the first few months of 2021.

🔸Shiba Inu (SHIB)

The Shiba Inu is the inspiration for the Shiba Inu (SHIB), an alternative cryptocurrency built on the Ethereum (ERC-20) platform. Its backers have called their cryptocurrency the “Dogecoin killer” because it is often used as a substitute for Dogecoin. In August 2020, an unnamed person or people using the name Ryoshi released a service called SHIB. According to Ryoshi’s paper, SHIB’s decentralization is ensured by the Ethereum ecosystem’s reliability and security.

🔸Dogelon Mars (ELON)

On April 23, 2021, a new meme coin called Dogelon Mars (ELON) was released. The mascot of ELON, the name of the cryptocurrency, also appears in a comic book series that is being marketed as an NFT (NFT). FACTOID: After Shiba Inu’s publicity stunt, the ELON team gave 50% of the token quantity to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Buterin gave roughly 43% of all ELON tokens to the Methuselah Foundation.

🔸MonaCoin (MONA)

In 2014, a mysterious person going by the alias “Mr.Watanabe” released a cryptocurrency called MonaCoin (MONA). It is a cryptocurrency that uses the Litecoin protocol and is primarily traded in Japan. The key distinction is that MONA used Lyra2REv2 as its mining algorithm of choice rather than Scrypt. The latter doesn’t require specialized mining hardware known as “ASIC miners” and uses less energy overall.

🔸Shiba Predator (QOM)

Regarding market cap, Shiba Predator (QOM) is currently in the 406. This meme coin has a total of US$ 50. As of this writing, one unit of QOM costs USD 0.00000008522, and a 24-hour trading volume of USD 3.2m is taking place.

🔸Samoyedcoin (SAMO)

The Samoyedcoin (SAMO) was designed as a Solana meme coin to benefit the community. The SAMO mascot is an image of an Eastern European dog called a samoyed (амоeд). In honour of Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, who already owns a samoyed, the breed was selected as the official mascot.

🔸ERC20 (ERC20)

CoinMarketCap lists ERC20 (ERC20), a meme coin with a market valuation of $40,463, as the 2457th most valuable cryptocurrency. As of June 8, 2022, the price of ERC20 is 0.0000358 USD, with a 24-hour trading volume of about USD 24,666.

🔸Hoge Finance (HOGE)

The Hoge Finance (HOGE) token is an ERC-20 (not to be confused with ERC20) token that is used in the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) industry. The asset was formerly referred to as Hoge. Finance, or Hogecoin, was released on February 7, 2021.

🔸Banano (BAN)

Banano (BAN) is a Directed Acyclic Graph–based cryptocurrency developed in the fourth generation (DAG).
