Skynet Labs and Akash Network Integration

Skynet Labs is proud to announce its partnership with Akash Network in the realization of a new full-stack decentralized internet.

Historically, centralized cloud providers like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have dominated the tech space, making it virtually impossible for any alternative innovators, let alone open-source or privacy-protecting ones, to fairly compete. Today marks a change in that narrative.

By combining Skynet’s decentralized storage and data sharing with Akash Network’s decentralized cloud computing, developers can finally build full-stack decentralized apps that match, and in many cases, outperform the services provided by centralized tech giants. Lower costs and higher reliability are just some of the clear advantages, however the real advantage is political stability, as noted by Skynet CEO and Founder, David Vorick:

“The terms of service and available APIs of centralized services change every day, but decentralization comes with guarantees. The entrepreneurs of tomorrow will build on decentralized tech, because it gives them so much more control over the future of their business.”

How does this solution work?

Akash brings the power of cloud servers and computing to allow running databases, APIs and application backends without renting a physical server or relying on traditional cloud providers. Servers and applications need robust storage possibilities, and Skynet is able to fill this gap. Skynet allows for database backups, user data storage, content delivery, and website hosting. Together, they unlock all of the possibilities of the traditional web, without all the gatekeepers. For example, you can:

  • Run a blog or ecommerce site with your website files on Skynet, but your database and content-management system running on Akash
  • Add user analytics to your Skynet Web App by running open-source tool like Matomo for gathering user statistics
  • Leverage the power of Skynet’s discoverable data by scraping public info from hundreds of sources and exposing it using an API on Akash. Then, access the API using a Skynet webapp.

Now that the DWeb door has been blown wide open, your imagination is the limit in building a new decentralized future. Be on the look out soon for opportunities to showcase your skills in combining the two technologies.

What’s next?

Deeply involved developer communities have been the core driving forces of Skynet and Akash. Both projects are proud to pursue this integration with endorsement and development support from their combined dev communities. Therefore, to support integrated solutions long-term, Akash and Skynet are leading efforts to provide community-targeted funding:

OpenRegistry is a new project to make Docker Hub redundant, and replace it with a decentralized version. With support from Akash and Skynet, OpenRegistry is building a new container registry that would be compatible with any container engine.” Read more details from Akash’s Colin Lowenberg.

Into the Decentralized Future

The integration of Skynet and Akash marks the arrival of a new formidable challenger in the cloud provider arena. We enter an era in which a decentralized network of providers in data storage and computing will be the backbone of our internet, rather than centralized tech monopolies.

Just as their partnership efforts have been directed with great consideration from their respective communities, they believe that building the decentralized future will also be community-led: a decentralized network of cloud computing and storage providers will operate via open-source software platforms. Likewise, there will be no single entity or project that controls the development of the decentralized web. They will live in a new decentralized internet ecosystem far more user-centric, diverse, and competitive than they’ve ever experienced before.
