What is dApp Staking?

Step 4: Add Your Staking Amount

You can click on our project to learn more about the smart contract we use for the staking and the technology and utility we provide to the community. To add your staking amount, click ‘Stake’ in the box and sign in with your wallet on a browser extension.

Step 5: Add, Unstake, or Claim

Once you have staked your tokens, you can do three things: add, unstake, or claim.

1. Add: to stake more; you can add more ASTR in dApp staking.
2. Unstake: to unstake, you can claim your ASTR back.
3. Claim: (top of page): claim your rewards from all dApps you staked on. For every ERA, you can claim your rewards, but we recommend doing this once every week.

Astar Network build the next generation of multichain smart contract hub with the support of Celer Network, the leading blockchain interoperability protocol secured by its unique State Guardian Network (SGN).

Recently, Celer Network announced the integration of the Celer Inter-chain Message (Celer IM) Framework into Astar and Shiden ecosystems.

An introduction to Celer IM

Celer Network one of the leading blockchain interoperability protocols with its State Guardian Network, a Tendermint-based PoS blockchain built to realize seamless multi-blockchain interoperability. And Celer IM is the inter-chain messaging framework secured by Celer’s SGN with its unique flexible security model and high-level reliability.

Celer IM is a hybrid framework mainly composed of 4 major parts:

• State Guardian Network (SGN): a PoS blockchain built using Cosmos SDK with an independent set of validators who stake $CELR to secure the blockchain, and validate and sign cross-chain messages.
• Message Bus contract: a set of smart contracts deployed on different blockchains integrated with Celer IM for sending and receiving cross-chain messages.
• Executor: send the cross-chain messages verified & signed by SGN validators to the destination blockchain’s message bus contract as a relayer.
• Independent watchtower (optional): if dApps choose an optimistic-rollup-like security model for inter-chain messaging. An independent watchtower can double-validate the cross-chain message signed by SGN validators and prevent any malicious behavior during the mandatory buffer delay.

With Celer IM, Astar developers can send messages or invoke smart contract functions on other major L1s. First, they send the intention as a message to the Celer IM Message Bus smart contract on Astar Network (that contract address is found here).

Then the validator, called the State Guardian Network. Will first reach a consensus on the existence of this message and, concurrently, generate a stake-weighed multi-signature attestation. Subscribed executors then relay that attestation to the Message Bus contract of the destination chain.

On the destination chain, the Message Bus contract will check the message’s validity and trigger the corresponding logic associated with the message immediately or after a buffer delay based on the security model chosen by the dApp developer.

Celer IM empowers Astar developers with more cross-chain use cases

By using Celer’s Inter-chain Message Framework. The Astar developers will have the option to build inter-chain native dApps which can leverage diverse multi-blockchain ecosystems. With the simplicity of a single-transaction UX and without complicated manual interactions involving multiple 3rd-party bridges.

Some interesting use cases:

• Cross-chain DEXs that allow users to swap Astar assets across multiple blockchains and utilize the liquidity pools on Ethereum, BNB chain, etc. to minimize slippage.
• Yield aggregators that allow users to manage vaults on Ethereum, Fantom, Avalanche, etc. from Astar Network
• Lending protocols where users can use their portfolios on Ethereum or BNB chain to borrow Polkadot-native assets on Astar Network
• Metaverse games where users can utilize their NFTs on other L1s

Astar as a platform for inter-chain native dApps

The end goal of Astar, to build the multichain smart contract hub that removes limits for developers in multichain era. Creating the space for developers to build and realize their visions freely, using the programming languages and development tools you are familiar with, supported by XVM.

One of the most significant differences between Web3, which is built on blockchain, and Web2 is the transparency of data; it’s possible to trace all on-chain activities (transactions) of Web3 end users. This dramatically increases the data that we can access and opens the door for massive opportunities for development. Imagine if all the transactions on Amazon were done using cryptocurrency on blockchain, you could access the purchase data of customers even if you were an employee at another e-commerce platform! That’s a new opportunity for the competing platform to learn from a market leader.

Even though it’s possible to gather this information, in practice blockchain data is largely irretrievable and meaningless without additional software. That is where Covalent comes in. Covalent allows you to access organized on-chain data from Astar and Shiden Networks by using a simple API. This enables dApp developers and end users to access a rich amount of on-chain data without heavy coding, allowing you to make better-informed decisions.

Getting Historical Token Prices

There are many powerful APIs from Covalent that an end user can use. Here we will introduce how to get historical token prices using pricing endpoints. A developer could use this information to create a trading dApp, rich with information, that provides bidders and sellers with historical information. From there, a user has a bit more insight into larger market trends and consumer sentiment.

Let’s walk through retrieving this information. Start by heading over to Covalent API docs and choose “Astar Mainnet” as the network. Then scroll down to the “Pricing Endpoints” section. Here you will find that there is an API for getting historical token prices.

Using the API is the usual way for in-depth analysis, but for this example, we will use the GUI for testing purposes. In this example, we retrieve the historical price data for $WASTR from 2022/8/1 to 2022/9/30. You’ll need the contract address for $WASTR from a block explorer, such as Blockscout. Fill in the necessary information, and hit “RUN” to see a sample response on the right. The returned object includes a token price for each day.

If you use Python to call this API and transform the data into a more flexible type, such as Pandas DataFrame, you will be able to analyze the data with more insight. Considering that most third-party APIs for getting historical token prices are not free, this could be a powerful tool for average retail users, as well as experienced developers.

Analyze NFT holders

Covalent also allows you to analyze NFTs with its easy-to-use API. For instance, let’s analyze one of the most popular NFT collections on Astar, which is Astar Degens. First, head over to TofuNFT and get the contract address for AstarDegens. You can find the contract address under the “info” tab, see below.

Next, go back to the Covalent API Docs webpage, and input the NFT contract address to “Get token holders as of any block height” API. You will then see the result with how many DEGENs each address owns. The address with the most has 93 DEGENs. Wow, that’s a real degen!

Just like that, you can use Covalent in a fun way to analyze your favorite NFT collection. For developers, this could be a key metric to provide insight into community engagement and wallet activity, especially during campaign events and partnership announcements.

Astar dApp Staking Portal V2 is Live! DApp staking is one of the easiest ways to participate in their ecosystem and support the ethos of a decentralized network that grows with the community. The portal page is the shared space of the close-knit community; the first meeting point where users, stakers, and developers directly interact with each other. Here, users can explore the dApps of their ecosystem–DeFi, NFTs, Tooling, and Utility. You, as a user, can choose your favorite dApp to use and become a dApp staker by supporting your favorite projects. Both dApp stakers and developers receive ASTR inflation rewards. An economic relationship is created that incentivizes stakers to financially support our number 1 human asset: developers.

What we were missing?

While dApp staking offers the benefits of financial incentives and creating a developer-centered architecture, the portal interface hasn’t delivered this in the most user-friendly way. We are at a point in our journey where staking must be a great user experience. Our portal needs to encourage user participation and improve everyone’s understanding of dApp staking. DApp staking portal v2 now improves staking information, user experience, and portal functionality.

There will be several stages to complete the full rollout of v2. We will announce new features and UI as they are added. Once complete we will have an intuitive page with clear information that better connects the community of stakers to dApp developers. Below we will walk you through this first batch of new features, and then share what we are adding over the upcoming months to complete v2.

The Portal Page V2 — MVP

Three areas of the portal page have been developed to address the limitations mentioned above: user panel, projects page, and the staking page.

Staking Metrics

At the top of the page you’ll notice a new header that clearly highlights the major metrics that are important to stakers:

• TVL in dApp staking
• Current era
• Staking APR
• Total dApps whitelisted for dApp staking

These four metrics will continue to track the evolution of our networks.

Developer Incentives are now displayed to clearly communicate to new builders about the portion of inflation rewards directed to our dApps. That currently sits at 287,712 ASTR each era (roughly every 24 hours)!

User Panel

There are three tabs in your User Panel:

• My Rewards: staking details, including total rewards earned
• Unbonding: a list of ASTR that are currently unbonding
• My dApps: a single list with all nominated dApps and management functions to add or reallocate staked assets

Projects Page

The new Projects Page is designed to aggregate all the important information about a dApp into one spot, including:

• Important dApp-specific graphics
• Staking information (number of stakers and total staked)
• Builders bio for the team
• Project-specific information (socials, official links, & basic dApp architecture)

Each project on the portal staking page can share important messages and general information. Sharing this publicly makes it easier for users and stakers to learn about the dApp’s products and keep up-to-date about the project’s goals and achievements. Ultimately, the projects page is a way for dApps to build trust with the community by sharing their progress and improving transparency.

3. Improved Staking Page

The portal Staking Page now displays links to help everyone navigate our ecosystem; we will highlight the most useful tutorials and videos for you. Additionally, the new staking page will promote the developers that contribute to the network. In addition to providing the UI that allows you to easily support developers via staking, we want the portal to celebrate the hard-working projects found on Astar and Shiden.

Finally, you will see our dApps grouped into four categories: DeFi, NFTs, Tooling, and Utility. It will be easier to find a new dApp project on the portal.

Future Improvements

Over the upcoming months we’ll add additional features and UI elements to improve clarity and enhance the usability of the staking page. Three major updates to look out for are:

1. Visualization of Dynamic Inflation

Providing a visual of the network’s current distribution of inflation rewards (see example below). Currently, the portion of rewards that is shared between the treasury and stakers is dynamic, meaning these rewards fluctuate based on the TVL and other parameters of the network. With the addition of this visualization, stakers can better understand the inflation structure of ASTR/SDN directly on the portal staking page. No digging through docs or polkadot.js.

2. Enhanced Staking Functionality.

Staking should be a painless and enjoyable process. Both Astar and Shiden stakers will have the option to easily Rebond their tokens that are unbonding from a staked dApp. It’s a small feature that will give you more flexibility and greater control of your assets.

They are also excited to introduce a new feature to the Shiden community, thanks to their XCM integration with Oak’s Turing Network: Autostaking. Autostaking through Turing will be the first example of using XCM for a non-token transfer use case on their network. Long-term Shiden stakers will no longer have to log in weekly to claim and restake their rewards. Just stake, set to autostaking, and receive rewards. Final details on this feature will be released once live.

Of course, they will bring autostaking to their Astar stakers shortly after.

3. Customized Design.

This feature is fun. They  will be able to customize the portal display. So, yes… we can celebrate holidays and events from across the world: Christmas or Japanese New Year? Though I vote for Oktoberfest! Most importantly, we can further highlight the builders of Astar–our dApps and their current events will be displayed and promoted on the portal.

Allowing Native Movement of the ASTR, INTR, and interBTC Tokens Between Chains.

With the Polkadot ecosystem of parachains and cross-consensus messaging (XCM), not only do we have multi-chain assets, but we can also leverage functional interoperability. At Astar Network, we believe that this is the key to creating the next generation of innovative dApps and further progressing Web3.0. By opening the latest HRMP channel with Interlay we created a new chapter in our mission.

By opening the HRMP channels between Interlay and Astar Network interBTC, the 1:1 Bitcoin-backed asset, will be able to enter the Astar DeFi ecosystem in a trustless and secure way. Users will be able to utilize the BTC-pegged asset without worrying about bridging risks, and developers will be able to build DeFi protocols with the power of interBTC.

HRMP channels between Kintsugi and Shiden canary networks have also been opened. KNT and kBTC are now available on Shiden.
